ku  – kur – Kurdî – Kurdish | Between 25 and 30 million speakers in Kurdistan, a region covering southeast Turkey, northern Iraq, northwest Iran, and northern Syria, as well as in some neighbouring countries. Kurdish has various forms, the two major being Kurmanji or Northern Kurdish (kmr), spoken in southeast Turkey and neighbouring regions of Iraq and Iran, and Sorani or Central Kurdish (ckb), spoken in Iraqi Kurdistan and northwest Iran. The names in Kurmanji and Sorani are listed on the relevant species list R.
